The High School Environmental Intern Program piloted by the Citizens Environmental Council of Burlingame (CEC) and the City of Burlingame in 2018-19 will be back in 2020 with new partners and a new name, and it will be available to high school students throughout San Mateo County.

With additional support and funding from Peninsula Clean Energy and county’s Office of Sustainability, we will roll out the Climate Ambassadors Fellowship in January 2020. Andra Yeghoian, director of environmental literacy for the San Mateo County Office of Education, is collaborating with us to expand our model into a countywide program.

Students in the internship program will attend monthly workshops, research their local schools and communities, and develop and implement an eco-action plan that is designed around local climate mitigation efforts. Upon completion of the program in December 2020, they will be paid a $500 stipend.

The program will be open to students in grades 9 through 11 (as of January 2020) throughout San Mateo County. The first meeting will be held on January 11. The group will be composed of three chapters located in the North County, South County and Coastside. CEC Chair Mike McCord and Board Member Desiree Thayer will host monthly meetings of the North County group in Burlingame.

A description of the program and a link to the application form are available here. Applications are due at midnight on November 11. For questions, please contact Andra Yeghoian at or Zoe van Duivenbode at
